Remote Grasmere largely avoided the horrors suffered by other parts of Britain and mainland Europe during World War II but two local men were killed in action and German U-boat attacks on British merchant shipping brought strict rationing and food stamps to the sleepy Lakeland village.
To ensure Grasmere Gingerbread® stayed on the shelves of The Grasmere Gingerbread Shop, defiant wartime owner Daisy Hotson substituted margarine for butter and ingeniously used finely grated carrot to mimic the sweetness of sugar.
The Grasmere Gingerbread Shop - unchanging through both World Wars
To mark the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day (VE Day 80) when Germany surrendered to the Allies, four days of celebrations are earmarked for the UK.
VE Day celebrations in London, Thursday 8th May 1945
Beginning on Monday 5th May, they include street parties for veterans, tea dances, concerts, military flypasts of WW2 aircraft including spitfires and hurricanes from the pivotal Battle of Britain air campaign, parades, church services and the lighting of thousands of beacons lit across the UK including several in Cumbria.
For many people - especially those with parents and grandparents who lived through the original VE Day on 8th May 1945 - quieter celebrations at home and in back gardens will pay tribute to those who fought for freedom in Europe.

To mark this momentous occasion, Grasmere Gingerbread® has created three thoughtful gift sets which include spitfire and VE-shaped pieces of freshly-baked Grasmere Gingerbread® made to Sarah Nelson’s delicious original 1854 recipe and not Daisy Hotson emergency wartime version.
