Although Grasmere Gingerbread® is a devotee of Charles Dickens’ classic festive novel A Christmas Carol, this year we turned to Hard Times for seasonal inspiration as the great performative writer’s tenth novel shares a 170th anniversary with Grasmere Gingerbread®.
Published in 1854 - the same year that Victorian cook Sarah Nelson invented her delicious spicy-sweet cross between a biscuit and cake - Dickens used prose in Hard Times to decry 19th century industrialisation in much the same way that Grasmere’s William Wordsworth employed poetry to bemoan the ‘rash assault’ of the Kendal and Windermere Railway upon the Victorian era Lake District.
Fittingly, Hard Times’ championing of creativity, generosity and altruism not only reflects the tenets of Christmas but the personal qualities of Sarah Nelson who overcame great familial hardship to create her world-famous Grasmere Gingerbread®.
